Bellringing at St Andrew's Enfield
We ring bells at St Andrew's church in the market-place in Enfield in Middlesex (north
London). This is our church:
Bell ringing
Church bell ringing is a thoroughly enjoyable and deeply fascinating art. For many centuries church bells have proclaimed the message of the Church to towns and
villages. Ringing provides a valuable opportunity for fellowship and for service within the life
of a parish church.
We ring our bells for
- Sunday service
- Weddings
- Special occasions
- Enjoyment and practice
Change ringing
Bell ringers use their skill at controlling the bells to make them ring in continuously
changing orders. The patterns we ring are often many centuries old and have strange names
like "Grandsire doubles". Ringing these patterns or methods is a deeply
fascinating art.
Could you ring church bells?
You do NOT need to be strong, musical or brainy. Men and women, boys and girls
all ring.
Nor do you need to be able to climb a spiral staircase - at St Andrew's,
there are only about a dozen steps from the outside into the ringing chamber.
You only need to practise one night a week and ring for service on Sunday mornings.
If you would like to ring, you will be warmly welcome. We, like most towers, are
always keen to teach new ringers, so please come along and have a go. With
recent departures of ringers to elsewhere in the country, we are particularly
keen for fresh faces.
How to find out more
For more information, contact Lucy
Dawson (020 8804 6667), or pop along! We practise on Thursday
evenings from 7.30 to 9.00, and ring on Sundays from 9.30 to 10.00. We would be delighted
to see you then.
With ringers moving away from the area, we are more keen than ever to see new
faces: if you think you might be interested in giving bellringing a go, drop us
an email, give us a ring, or come along on Thursday evening - you can just
watch, or have a go yourself. With a camera in the belfry, you can see the bells
in motion too.
